Worldwide: Approximately 1.2 million people lose their lives each year in road traffic crashes, while around 50 million others are injured.
The leading cause of death for people aged 5–29 years is road traffic crashes.
In 2025, the European Union recorded an average of 43 road traffic fatalities per million inhabitants, whereas Greece recorded 50 fatalities per million inhabitants. Although this figure remains above the EU average, it represents a 22% reduction compared with 2024, reflecting significant progress in improving road safety.
