Defensive Driving

There is a great deal of information on the road. The more information there is to process, the more potential hazards may arise.

SPEED ADAPTATION

Appropriate speed allows the driver to continuously assess road conditions, anticipate what could go wrong, and prepare an escape plan for every possible scenario.

INTERSECTIONS

Regardless of the type of intersection or right of way, every intersection must be approached with caution.

Approach by reducing speed, leaving enough time and space to respond to possible mistakes by other road users and minimizing the consequences in the event of a crash.

It is well known that many drivers commit various violations on a daily basis.

CHANGING COURSE / LANE:

– Use indicators to clearly communicate your intention to change direction. This allows other road users to prepare. They may postpone a maneuver they were planning to make or even facilitate your own maneuver. Indicators help maintain a smooth flow of traffic.
– Check your mirrors at all times.
– Check blind spots by looking over your shoulder before changing direction or lanes. Smaller or larger vehicles can often remain hidden in areas where they are not expected to be.
– Wait until you can see the entire front of the vehicle you have overtaken in your mirror before moving back into its lane. Only then is it safe to enter its path. There is no need to place another road user in a difficult situation by cutting in.

The best response on the road is prevention and anticipation. Defensive driving means anticipating the mistakes of others. It is the ability NOT to be caught by surprise, because you have already considered possible scenarios and have a response plan in place. Remain in control!
